Tanzania is a country in east Africa that borders on the Indian Ocean. The Serengeti Plain is a national park that covers 5,600 square miles (14,500 sq. km.) and is known for its wildlife. The Masai Steppe is a grassy or barren central plateau rising to 3,500 feet (1,100 meters) above sea level, covering over a third of the country. The climate is mild with two long rain seasons, averaging 84oF (29oC) during the day and cool nights. Some areas receive more than 40 inches (100cm) of rain each year.
People
Many believe the earliest-known humans came from Tanzania. People speak Swahili, English, and Bantu. The people are farmers raising livestock. Most adults can read and write. Tribal elders wear decorative necklaces and earrings, as well as exotic body paint. Under traditional customs, boys' and girls' heads are shaved at a certain age.
