My name is Mbweha and my sister's name is Ndoto. We are nomads, part of the Masai tribe, who travel from the steep cliffs of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the low-land plains of Masi-Mara in the serengeti of northern Tanzani. We are known for our power, our strength, and our bravery. We make and produce everything we need for the trek with our herds across the plains. Providing for our community or kraal is our livelihood, as is our cattle. My people believe that cattle were given to us for safe keeping by our god. We believe that we are to be one with both the wild and the tame animals about our surroundings.
My tribe is education-oriented. We believe that our future as both a people and a community can only be saved through our children. The more children we have, the better off we are. We will pass on the stories of our ancestors and will practice the initiation rites and customs with our children. I am learning how to heal others and cure the sick.
My people have survived unimaginable hardships: from being banished from our land to the destruction of our communities from disease. Through all of this, however, we have become stronger. We learned the importance of team work, as well as the strength of both our customs and our god. Take me because I am a survivor who can adapt and persevere.
