Airplane Parts/Functions
Answers

  1. What are the names of the parts of the airplane?
    1. A: Vertical Stabilizer
    2. B: Rudder
    3. C: Elevator
    4. D: Horizontal Stabilizer
    5. E: Flaps
    6. F: Aileron
    7. G: Wing
    8. H: Jet Engine
    9. I: Fuselage
    10. J: Slats

  2. Describe the following aircraft motions.
    1. Pitch: Dip or rise of the airplane's nose
    2. Roll: Rotation of the wings of an airplane about its center of gravity located on its longitudinal axis
    3. Yaw: Side to side movement of the airplanes nose
    4. Loop: The airplane flies in a circular path in a vertical plane with the lateral axis of the aircraft remaining horizontal.
    5. Dive: Nose down decrease in altitude
    6. Climb: Nose up increase in altitude
    7. Lift: Force generated by turning of airflow which holds an airplane in the air

  3. What are the functions of the parts of the airplane?
    1. A: To control side to side movement of the airplane's nose (yaw)
    2. B: To cause side to side movement of the nose of the airplane (yaw) for maneuvering
    3. C: To cause up or down movement of the nose of the airplane (pitch) for maneuvering
    4. D: To control up and down movement of the nose of the airplane (pitch)
    5. E: To provide and control additional lift during takeoff and landing of the airplane
    6. F: To modify wing lift thus causing roll of the wings from side to side(clockwise/counterclockwise) about the airplane's center of gravity
    7. G: Provide most of the lift required for flight
    8. H: Provides force to propel the airplane through the air
    9. I: Platform to hold all of the pieces together
    10. J: To provide and control additional lift during takeoff and landing of the airplane

  4. Which parts are used to control lift at low speed for takeoff and landing? Flaps and slats

  5. Which parts, installed one to each wing, operate in opposite directions (i.e., one up and one down)? Aileron

  6. If the part in Problem 4 on the right wing is up and the one on the left wing is down, what will the airplane do? Roll to the right (counter clockwise)

  7. If the pilot lowers the elevator, what will the airplane's tail do? Tilt up

  8. What will this in turn cause the airplane's nose to do? Tilt down

  9. If the pilot moves the rudder to the left, what will the airplane's tail do? Move to the right

  10. What will this is turn cause the airplane's nose to do? Move to the left

  11. What airplane motion will occur with the elevator deflected up and the rudder deflected to the right? Nose up and to the right. With enough power it will create a climbing turn to the right (Remember: The motion of all airplane parts is as if you were looking at the airplane from the front).
  12. What is a spoiler? Control surface between the leading and trailing edges of the wings; used on large airliners in place of ailerons to produce roll for maneuvering
