Many volcanoes dot the land and give the arable land many rich nutrients. Peru is a leading producer of copper, lead, silver, and zinc. |

| More than half of the people are Indians, ancestors of the Incas, who had a great empire from the 1200's to the 1500's. Most people speak either Spanish or an Indian language. Most of the people are Roman Catholics, but some Indian Roman Catholics still worship Inca gods. |
