Location
Peru is the third largest country in South America. The Andes Mountains extend along the Pacific coast from Cape Horn to Panama. The mountains have an average height of 12,000 feet above sea level. Many volcanoes dot the land and give the arable land many rich nutrients. Peru is a leading producer of copper, lead, silver, and zinc.
People
More than half of the people are Indians, ancestors of the Incas, who had a great empire from the 1200's to the 1500's. Most people speak either Spanish or an Indian language. Most of the people are Roman Catholics, but some Indian Roman Catholics still worship Inca gods.
