Algae Simple plant life existing either as single celled organisms or organized to live as colonies. Some algae are placed in phylum Monera and the remainder are in phylum Protista. Because algae is photosynthetic, they would be essential in any attempts at terraforming a planet's atmosphere to include oxygen.
