The dust from the explosions has completely blocked the Sun, creating a perpetual winter. Much of the vegetation above ground has been destroyed or has died, and the water systems have become contaminated. The launch window to Mars has arrived. The Aeronauts decide it's time to launch the shuttle to Mars to set up a colony on the planet's surface. The shuttle has been equipped with lifepods which allow for transport to and from the station and the planet's surface. The lifepods have thrust and docking, but generally drift.
