Man relies on plants for food and oxygen through a process known as photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and water into oxygen and other essential materials. Only photosynthetic organisms, such as plants, can use solar energy directly.

Plants absorb the sunlight, convert it into chemical energy and store it in carbohydrates. The plants then transform the carbohydrates into proteins, fats, vitamins, and other compounds used for food stuff. Most living organisms eat plants which provide them with the energy necessary for metabolism, growth, development, and reproduction. Humans also use the wood and fiber from plants for shelter, and rely upon fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and natural gas.
