When flying airplanes, we use general reference maps, called aeronautical charts, that help us navigate from one place to another. Among other things, pilots flying smaller aircraft at lower altitudes use the landmarks on these maps to determine where they are and whether or not they are going in the right direction to get where they want to go. Besides visual reference points, they can also use electronic navigation instruments to help them navigate.
