Dr. Mattia Gazzola
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Design of soft machines

We introduce an approach based on minimal theoretical modeling, direct numerical simulations
and evolutionary optimization for the characterization and design of arbitrary musculoskeletal
architectures. Applications range from slithering and swimming bio-locomotion strategies to
artificial muscles and bio-hybrid systems.

Mattia Gazzola is an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Science and Engineering
Department at UIUC and a Blue Waters Professor at the National Center for Supercomputing
Applications. Mattia joined UIUC in Fall 2016 after a postdoc at Harvard and a Ph.D. at ETH
Zurich. Mattia’s work focuses on biological propulsion in fluids and soft mechanics. His studies
were awarded with the ETH Medal in 2013, with Early and Advanced Swiss National Science
Foundation Fellowships, and featured on the covers on several scientific journals among such
as Science, Nature and JFM.
