ONERA M6 Wing: Instructions for GMAN

The boundary conditions are set within the common grid file run.cgd by using GMAN. The procedure using the interactive graphics interface is as follows

  1. Start GMAN.
    gman

  2. Hit RETURN to select the default version of GMAN (if prompted).

  3. Read in the common grid file by typing at the GMAN: prompt.
    file run.cgd

  4. Specify that units are feet. (Note: WIND requires dimensional values. The default units are inches. The grid has been nondimensionalized by the wing span. Here we use units of feet to be consistent with the default units (english engineering) of WIND. Thus it is implied here that the wing span is 1.0 ft. This presents no problem here because we still match the Mach and Reynolds numbers and use the consistent value of the mean aerodynamic chord in feet in using the Reynolds number and assumed temperature of 460 R to compute the value of pressure to input to WIND.)
    units feet

  5. Switch to graphics mode.
    swi

  6. Display some of the grid.
    Pick SHOW (upper right panel)
    Pick SHOW SURFACES
    Pick PICK ZONE
Pick 3 (from the zone list)
    Pick PICK K-PLANE
    Pick K=1
Pick NEXT PLANE (to step through surfaces)
Pick PREVIOUS PLANE (to step back to K1)
    Pick PICK J-PLANE
    Pick J=1

At this point the J1 and K1 grid surfaces of zone 3 will be displayed. The J1 surface is the top of the wing. Moving the mouse so that the cross-cursor is near the upper-right most grid point and clicking the left mouse button will cause the coordinates of that point to be displayed in the middle right panel. It should indicate that the coordinates of point (73,49,1) are approximately x = 0.633 ft, y = 6.37 ft, and z = 0.0 ft. Note that the units are feet, which was desired from the units feet command.

The grid can be rotated by depressing the left mouse button and moving the mouse down and to the right. The grid near the wing can be viewed better by "zooming" by depressing the middle mouse button and moving the mouse down. The grid can then be translated by depressing the right mouse button and moving the mouse around. These mouse operations are the same as in PLOT3D.

One may realized that the zoom used a inconvenient center point. The center point can be changed by picking center from the top right menu. A prompt will be written to "pick center point" using the left mouse button. A prompt will then ask to "pick outer limit of display area". This operation can be used to do a quick zoom to a location of the grid.

One can reset the display by using the Reset option in the list in the upper right-hand corner.

  7. Specify the boundary conditions.
    Pick BOUNDARY COND. (left panel)

GMAN defaults to the last zone that was displayed, which was zone 3. Note that the "*" to the left of the zone number or surface indicates the "active" zone and boundary, respectively. The sequence is to select the zone, then the boundary, and then specify the boundary condition type on that boundary or a subregion of that boundary. The initial boundary condition type is UNDEFINED. GMAN is now waiting for the zone and boundary to be specified. Let us start with zone 1.

Pick 1 (from the zone list)
    Pick I1 (lower left panel)

At this point, the I1 grid surface is displayed. Since the I1 grid surface is a constant-x grid plane, the view may show a line. Pressing on the left mouse button and moving the mouse to the right will turn the grid slightly to show the three-dimensional nature of the grid. To select the boundary condition type, execute the following menu choices

    Pick MODIFY BNDY
    Pick CHANGE ALL
    Pick OUTFLOW

At this point, the bottom panel should contain the text "1617 points were changed". The boundary condition specification is now saved for this boundary by the following menu choices

Pick BOUNDARY COND. (top left panel)
    Pick YES-UPDATE FILE

The common grid file run.cgd is modified to include this boundary condition specification.

The boundary condition specification can be checked by selecting

    Pick IDENTIFY PNTS. (left panel)
    Pick OUTFLOW

The individual grid points will show up in color to indicate that those points are specified as OUTFLOW.

The boundary condition type is now specified for the IMAX boundary of zone 1, which is coupled to the I1 boundary of zone 2.

Pick BOUNDARY COND. (top left panel)
    Pick PICK ZONE/BNDY
    Pick IMAX
    Pick MODIFY BNDY
    Pick COUPLE
    Pick SEL OTHER BND
Pick 2 (from the zone list)
    Pick I1
    Pick COUPLE
    Pick BOUNDARY COND.
    Pick YES-UPDATE FILE

During the above operations, the IMAX surface of zone 1 is displayed. After it is indicated that this surface is to be coupled to the I1 boundary of zone 2, that grid surface is displayed in another color. The fact that they are coincident is a check that the coupling will be good. The message area will indicate that "1617 undefined points were changed".

The J1 boundary of zone 1 is coupled to the J1 boundary of zone 4.

Pick BOUNDARY COND. (top left panel)
