Beginner's
Guide to Rockets
Equation of State (Ideal Gas)
Subject Area:
Physics, Algebra I
Grade Level:
9-12
National Mathematics
Standards:
- Apply integrated
mathematical problem-solving strategies to solve problems from outside
mathematics.
- Reflect upon
and clarify their thinking about mathematical ideas and relationships.
- Follow logical
arguments.
- Use and value
the connections between mathematics and other disciplines.
- Understand the
logic of algebraic procedures.
National Technology
Standards:
- Research Tools
- Use content-specific tools, software and simulations (e.g., environmental
probes, graphing calculators, exploratory environments, Web tools)
to support learning and research.
- Problem-Solving
and Decision-Making Tools - Routinely and efficiently use on-line
information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications,
communications, and productivity.
Objective:
After reading
an explanation from a NASA Web-based textbook, you will demonstrate
your understanding of the Equation of State for an ideal gas
by computing the gas constant
from air properties.
Beginner's Guide
to Rockets is a "textbook" of information prepared at NASA Glenn
Research Center to help you better understand how rockets work. Click
Beginner's Guide Index to
access the list of slides.
Open the slides called Air
Properties Definitions (with text) and
Equation of State
and read the definitions.
Using the information shown at Equation
of State Problems and additional given information, complete the
problems designed to demonstrate your ability to determine and use the
gas constant from the Equation of State.
Assessment:
You, or
you and your partner(s), will be evaluated on the accuracy or feasibility
of your
answers.
Evaluation:
You will
demonstrate the ability to apply information found on the World Wide
Web to physical data.
