Getting a Little "Lift"
out of Calculus
Part II: Activity

Aeronautics Logo

If so instructed by your teacher, print out a worksheet page for these problems.

Procedure:

  1. Looking at the plots in these three problems, predict which airfoil will have the greatest lift force.
  2. Find the lift generated by an airfoil given a pressure vs. area plot using one of the techniques developed in Part I of this series. All work must be shown in order to justify your answer.
  3. Include a statement explaining your reason for using the method you chose for each problem.
  4. How well did your results agree with your predictions?

Problem 1:

Graph of pressure versus chord. Triangular shaped

Problem 2:

Graph of pressure versus chord. Elliptical shaped

Problem 3:

Graph of pressure versus chord. Top is curved, bootom is straight.
