About Us

-- The students that created this home page are a group from the Strongsville High School science club. Strongsville is a suburban city just south of Cleveland, in Ohio. We collected information from many different sources in the months leading up to the creation of this homepage. We obtained information from local libraries, and we gained additional knowledge from experts in this field.

-- First, we were shown some water testing techniques by Steve Tuckerman. He is an Environmental Scientist, and works for the Ohio EPA Division of Water Quality Planning and Assessment. He demonstrated how the EPA tests fish for disease and how to measure the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. We tested a Baker's River, a local river behind our high school. It was a very helpful hands-on session.

-- Next we were visited by Elaine Marsh. She is a founding member of the Friends of the Crooked River. This is a local watchdog group that looks out for the Cuyahoga. She gave us some valuable background information about the Cuyahoga and the new challenges it faces today. Her enthusiasm was greatly appreciated!

-- To complete our project, we attended a four-day camp at Huron High School, courtesy of NASA lewis. Huron is another suburb of Cleveland and lies right on Lake Erie. The main focus of the camp was learning to use the Internet, so all the computer work for our homepage was done in Huron. Roger Storm, a teacher at Fairview High School, taught us how to format our reports to the Internet. During the camp we stayed at the Sawmill Creek Resort Hotel. On our third day we were visited by another interesting speaker, Mr. Jim Bull. He is an environmental education specialist. He gave us a slide presentation about the wildlife and other aspects of the Cuyahoga. We visited a nearby estuary, and got the chance to observe two bald eagles. We went on a bike ride around South Bass island where Perry's Monument is located. A trip to Cedar Point was also planned to give us a break from our work. A good experience for everyone involved.
