Design Challenge Answers 1. What is your primary concern or challenge? TAKEOFF THRUST; PLACEMENT OF ENGINES; COST OF REDESIGN; SWITCH BACK WHEN NEW ENGINES AVAILABLE 2. Why? THE ENGINES IN INVENTORY ARE NOT AS POWERFUL 3. Which engines would you install on the planes? ANSWERS WILL VARY. SUGGESTED ANSWER IS 5. 4. Determine the number and models of engines as well as their physical position on the plane. ANSWERS WILL VARY. SUGGESTED ANSWER IS TO INSTALL 4 PW 2000S AND 1 CFM 56 3B-2 ON TEN AIRPLANES. 5. Any group positioning the engines in unique but fully functional positions will earn a 5% Bonus. ANSWERS WILL VARY. THERE COULD BE 2 ENGINES ON EACH FRONT WING--THE PW 2000. THE FIFTH ENGINE COULD BE IN THE TAIL WING . 6. Describe any other design alterations and why. EXTRA GAS TANKS WOULD BE NEEDED DUE TO MORE ENGINES; WEIGHT OF AIRCRAFT CHANGES. 7. How many airplanes can you put back in the air? ANSWERS WILL VARY--THE HIGHER, THE BETTER. IF USING SUGGESTED ANSWERS, YOU CAN PUT 10 AIRPLANES BACK IN THE AIR.
