Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics
Drag Equation - Level 2

Subject Area: Geometry, Algebra I, Physical Science

Grade Level: 9-11

National Standards:

Mathematics
  • Geometry - Represent problem situations with geometric models and apply properties of figures.
  • Algebra I - Operate on expressions and matrices, and solve equations and inequalities.

Science

  • Physical Science - Motion and forces.

Technology

  • Technology Research Tools - Select and apply technology tools for research, information analysis, problem -solving, and decision -making in content learning.
  • Technology Problem-solving and Decision-making Tools - Routinely and efficiently use on-line information resources to meet needs for collaboration, research, publications, communications, and productivity.

Objectives:

After reading the Drag Equation page from the NASA Web-based textbook, you will demonstrate an understanding of this equation and how drag is dependent on the variables included in the equation.

Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics is a Web site of information prepared at NASA Glenn Research Center to help you better understand how airplanes work. Click on The Drag Equation to open the appropriate slide. Study the equation and read the explanation of this concept. Then using the information, access Drag Equation: Level 2 to complete the exercises.

Assessment:

You, or you and your partner(s), will be evaluated on the accuracy or feasibility of your answers.

Evaluation:

You will demonstrate the ability to use the information found in this slide of the Beginner's Guide to Aerodynamics and the various applicable math concepts needed to complete the problems involving the Drag Equation.
