SAMPLE SEALS FOR THE ORION CREW EXPLORATION VEHICLE (CEV) FABRICATED

The seals, also known as hybrid thermal barriers, were designed by the Seal Team at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) for the CEV main heat shield-to-back shell interface. The hybrid thermal barriers were fabricated in three different widths because the thickness of the thermal protection system (TPS) varies around the circumference of the CEV to reduce weight. The sample seals are being evaluated to assess their performance against representative TPS configurations. In addition, thermal modeling is being done to ensure the seal design has sufficient temperature and insulating capabilities.
