High Temperature Compression and Scrub Rig
The high temperature compression/scrub rig is a state-of-the-art test facility used to evaluate seal resiliency, durability, and exerted load (compression and frictional loads) at temperatures up to 3000°F (isothermal air environment) and loads up to 3300 lbf (Fig. 1). The rig uses a precision laser extensometer to track displacements at the seal interface during compression tests to minimize error due to thermal expansion of the actuator rods and associated test fixtures. Custom fixtures for both scrub and compression testing are fabricated from monolithic silicon carbide to facilitate evaluations at the 3000°F upper limit of the furnace. Fixturing is available in a wide variety of sizes to evaluate numerous seal configurations.

  • MTS Model 318.25 Servohydraulic Load Frame
    • 55 kip load frame
    • 3.3 kip actuator with 6 in. stroke
    • 100 lb, 500 lb, 3300 lb load cells
  • ATS Series 3350 Custom Box Air Furnace
    • Temperatures up to 3000°F (14.5 kW)
    • Large working volume (9” W x 14” D x 18” H)
  • Beta LaserMike Intelliscan 50 Extensometer
    • Non-contact Class II laser extensometer
    • 0 to 1.5 in. measurement range with ± 0.00025 in. accuracy
