Sorry

This answer is incorrect.

There are two ways to this problem.

The first method is to realize that every inch is the same as 250 miles. Therefore you would like to know how many times 250 will go into 1250. This implies division. So all that needs to be done is divide 1250 by 250 and the answer is how many inches are required.

The second method is to set up a proportion:

You have inches to miles given, therefore the right hand side of the proportion must also be set up as inches to miles. You already know the how many miles are required on the right side of the proportion, the only unknow is the inches.

Your proportion would look like:

1      x
__  = ___
250   1250

Then solve for x.

Method 1:

1250/250 = 5

Method 2:

1        x
___  =  ____
250     1250

Cross multiply

250x = 1250

Now divide both sides of the equation by 250

250x    1250
____  = ____
250     250

x = 5

Now let us try another one.

If the scale on a map is 1 inch = 850 miles, how many inches would represent 6460 miles.
