Sorry

This answer is incorrect.

To solve this problem you must follow these steps:

12y minus 16 equals 20y

The first thing to do is to gather all of the unknows to the same side of the equation. You can do this by subtracting 12y from both sides

12y minus 16 minus 12y equals 20y minus 12y

Next do the subtraction:

minus 16 equals 8y

Now you need to isolate the variable. In this case you must divide both sides of the equation by 8

minus 2 over sixteen eighths equals 8y over 8

After the cancelation you get the answer:

minus 2 equals y

Now let us try another one

Solve for y.

15y minus 45 equals 30y
