Industrial Pollution
The
Cuyahoga River has an area of concern in the lower 45 miles. The
river is polluted by heavy
metals, oil and grease, polychlorinated
biphenyls, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides,
ammonia, organic chemicals, and
bacteria. There are also many nonpoint run-off from urban areas,
hazardous waste sites, air pollutants,
contaminated sediments, sewerage overflow, and municipal
and industrial discharges.
There is an advisory on fish consumption, and is unsafe for body contact.
A remedial action plan has been
underway to clean- up the area.
The Ohio EPA appointed a committee
of 33 people representing
a broad spectrum of interest groups, which make up the Cuyahoga
Coordinating Committee (CCC). Smaller
committees, such as steering,
technical, community involvement
and plan drafteing handle the work
needed to be done. The
proposal was submitted to the OEPA in
June in 1992. The
operational expense for 1991-1992 was $252,000.
The remedial action plan is
now in
its second stage. So far some bacteria
levels have declined and
fish tissue contaiminaion is under
control.
