For Whitney Young Middle School, the wireless local area network allowed students to access the Internet during class time, and it allowed teachers to incorporate real-time information from the Internet into their lessons. The wireless LAN added mobility and flexibility to the school's computer network. The teachers shared the computers, but they were able to use them to access the Internet within their own classrooms, rather than from a fixed location in the school.
Students showed enthusiasm towards being able to access the Internet to complete their assignments, and they took greater pride in completing their work. Within their classes the students were exposed to real-world information that complimented their textbooks and that added more excitement to their learning experience.
The AIRNet Project successfully demonstrated that a wireless local area network is beneficial to the educational process when it is used to enhance a school's information technology infrastructure.
