The lunar phases and their explanation provide
a simple model for understanding ‘nightside’ views of other
planets, obtained from orbiting spacecraft. By comparing the crescent
moon with the crescent Mars, surprising evidence of a planetary
‘bulge’ is seen, possibly indicating a cataclysmic past
event.
