Beginner's Guide to Propulsion
J.E.T.S.- Jet Studies Enriched with Technology Systems
Jet Engine Activity


After studying the different jet engines and their components, you will work with a team of 2 - 4 students to build an engine using materials found around the classroom and/or home.

You will also present your knowledge of jet engines in a creative 3-5 minute skit. The skits will be videotaped in a "private" environment and shown to all students for peer and teacher review. (Time to record 10 skits: 45 minutes)

Directions:

  1. Review jet engines and take notes over the different types of engines and their components. Use the Beginner's Guide to Propulsion and Engine Sim to complete your research. You might want to begin with the slide called Jet Engine Parts.
  2. In your group (2 -4 students), decide which engine you will build.
  3. Using all of the materials given to you, build your jet engine
    and label the parts. Make sure all engine parts are labeled.
  4. Create a skit, to include all team members, that will describe how the engine works and its parts.
  5. Print one rubric for each team to use as part of a peer review.

Time frame: (5 hours total)

  • Constructing the engine - 2 hours
  • Creating the skit - 1 hour
  • Performing and videotaping the skit - 1 hour
  • Reviewing the video - 1 hour

Materials to be provided to each team:

  • Paper towel roll
  • Toilet paper roll
  • Two pencils
  • Two pieces of plain white paper
  • Two pieces of construction paper
  • Two index cards
  • Two straws
  • Two paper clips
  • Two metal fasteners
  • A paper plate
  • A Pringle's can with lid
  • A one liter bottle
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Small piece of cardboard
  • String
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Glue
  • Colored pencils
