Results Analysis Reports for Plum Brook Off-site Sediment Samples

In October 2005, NASA began an extensive off-site sampling program in areas along Plum Brook. The program began after NASA detected small amounts of cesium in some sediment samples. It was determined that the cesium resulted from permitted discharges of water when the reactor was operational (1961-73). From fall 2005 through spring 2006, NASA took some 1,200 sediment samples in an area extending from the Plum Brook Station fence line to Route 2. None of the samples posed a public health concern and nothing was present in the surface water of Plum Brook.

To identify every possible area where the material may have migrated over time, NASA hired Sandusky-based hydrogeological consultants, Haag Environmental. From 2006 to 2008, Haag scientists and staff analyzed nearly 2,000 more samples. Again, no sample posed a public health concern and the results were similar to previous sampling. Haag and NASA subsequently prepared a series of reports on the sampling results. They are posted below.
