| It is my true belief that valuing diversity
and inclusion in the workplace is a business strategy. The
most important reason to have a diversity program is to use
our inherent differences to maintain or attain leadership
in our line of business. As stated in a recent presentation
on NASA’s diversity strategic framework, “We know the best
employees come from diverse backgrounds and hold diverse viewpoints,
and that workforce diversity, when fully utilized, leads to
greater diversity of ideas and viewpoints which in turn leads
to more creativity and innovation.”
I would offer a simple model that should be considered when
we approach issues of diversity in the workplace. First, treat
people the way they want to be treated. Second, think about
how the person you are interacting with will feel regarding
what you may be getting ready to do or say. Third, think about
what your goal or end state looks like and how your colleagues,
employees or supervisors can help you achieve it. Last, ask
yourself if the group you are working with is one that thinks
alike, or one that tends to explore all the possibilities?
If we think along this manner and act with pure intent, then
diversity, and most importantly inclusion, will be our way
of doing business at Glenn.
