HPGB Facility: Schematic of the flow system for the High Pressure Gaseous Burner (HPGB) Facility. This unique optically accessible combustion rig is capable of operating at pressures up to 60 atmospheres and is cooled by air which is provided by facility compressors (up to 30 atm) or by a trailer array (up to 60 atm). The fuel and oxidizers are provided by 12-pack cylinder arrays that utilize sonic venturis for flow measurement and control. The sonic venturis allow the flows to be controlled precisely (with 0.5% accuracy). All systems are computer controlled using a programmable logic controller (PLC) in conjunction with a touch-screen enabled software system. The PLC enables all aspects of the facility to be tied to an automated shut-down system in the event of an emergency, while providing a large degree of flexibility in configuration. The HPGB flow systems provide up to 0.5 kg/s of cooling air flows.
