Wave Rotor Topping Cycles for Gas Turbine Engines
Shaft Work Extraction
Wave rotor configurations which produce shaft work are also under investigation. Sometimes called ‘wave engines’ to distinguish them from the ‘pressure exchangers’ thus far described, these devices have curved passages in which the gasdynamics take place. The curvature affects a change in angular momentum to the working gas which in turn provides torque to the shaft on which the passages rotate. Preliminary studies of these devices used as topping cycles have indicated even greater specific power increases (and SFC decreases) than the pressure exchanger wave rotor configurations.
