Workshop held on Propulsion Control and Diagnostics Research Under NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Programs

A workshop on the research being conducted by RHC (Controls and Dynamics Branch), under various projects of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission programs, was held at OAI (Ohio Aerospace Institute) on Nov. 6-7, 2007. There were 36 attendees for the workshop from industry, academia and other government agencies. The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Disseminate information to the research community about the propulsion control and diagnostics research being done by RHC in support of NASA Aeronautics programs
  • Get feedback from peers on value of the research and validity of the technical approach
  • Identify opportunities for potential collaboration and sharing of tools and methods.

The workshop consisted of:

  • Presentations by RHC researchers on the various research activities covering the research objectives and relationship to project goals, technical challenges and research approach, progress to date and future plans, and collaboration opportunities.
  • Tours of the RHC research facilities including the combustion and flow control rigs, the flight simulator, and the control design and simulation lab
  • Break-out sessions on the RHC research activities under five Aeronautics Projects: Subsonic Fixed Wing, Supersonic, Hypersonics, Integrated Vehicle Health Management, and Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control.
Additionally, one-on-one discussions between researchers and attendees were scheduled to get feedback and identify potential collaboration opportunities.

The preliminary feedback from the attendees is that the workshop was highly successful in meeting its objectives and they found it to be of high value, especially in terms of the opportunities it provided for interaction with the NASA researchers. The feedback from the attendees will be analyzed in detail in the near future and appropriate actions will be taken in terms of incorporating attendee comments and suggestions into research implementation plans, and following up on the potential collaboration opportunities that have been identified. The link below provides a summary of the workshop's overall feedback.
