The staff of the Metallography Laboratory is experienced in the preparation of a wide variety of materials, including metals, ceramics and metal and ceramic matrix composites. The lab is equipped to prepare sectioned specimens for reflected light and scanning electron microscopy as well as various other types of light microscopy. Special preparation techniques such as interference layering and plasma etching are also commonly employed to reveal the microstructure of a wide variety of materials and new preparation techniques are continually developed to accomodate the specific needs of new materials. The samples can be characterized by a wide variety of optical microscopes with the ability to do bright field, dark field, and polarized illumination along with other methods.
