The Analytical Chemistry Laboratory is part of the Analytical Science Group in the Structures and Materials Division at NASA Glenn. This facility performs qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis on a macro scale, including major elements and trace impurities. It is capable of analyzing metals, ceramics, and composites, as well as polymers for trace metal content. This information is used to investigate composition-physical property relationships, determine the effects of various processing conditions on a material, and identify sources of contamination or other "detective work" during the investigation of a test or operational anomaly. The laboratory includes atomic absorption and atomic emission spectrometers, combustion analyzers for interstitial gases, an x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, a wet chemistry laboratory and a laser ablation sampling accessory.
