Explanation of Special Characters in This WWW Publication
This document is formatted according to HTML 2.0. Because this version of HTML does
not support greek characters, subscripts, or superscripts (other than 1, 2, and 3),
these special characters are provided for in the following ways:
- Greek letters and special symbols (like "angstroms") are spelled out.
(However, the letter "u" is sometimes used for the greek "mu".)
- Subscripts are indicated by an underscore preceding the number or character,
like "D_max."
- Superscripts are indicated by a carat preceding the number or character, like
"12x10^8" (twelve times ten to the eighth power).
- For simple chemical formulas, no extra notation is used; for example, "H2O."
- Sometimes long subscripts or superscripts are enclosed in parentheses to avoid
ambiguity; for example, "T_(initial)P(final)."
- GIF files are used for some equations.
- Tables are coded in the HTML 2.0 format.
