These pie charts show the relative weights of the major aircraft systems: propulsion system, structure, systems and equipment, pilot, payload, and fuel. The fuel cell powerplant is significantly heavier than the conventional reciprocating engine. The use of hydrogen fuel also results in a classic volume and packaging problem. These constraints limit the payload- and fuel-carrying ability of the electric airplane.
