Luminescent coatings are used to measure surface air pressure and temperatures using a technique called pressure (PSP) & temperature (TSP) sensitive paint. The technique is applicable to both steady and unsteady environments and has been used on external aerodynamic (wing/fuselage) surfaces, internal surfaces of aerospace propulsion systems, rotating/moving equipment and
on ice built up on surfaces in our icing wind tunnel.
Luminescent phosphors are not only used as a sensor for high temperature measurements but are embedded as sublayers in thermal barrier coatings for erosion, crack detection and health monitoring of the coatings.
