Sonoluminescence is light given off by air bubbles dissolved in liquid when they undergo oscillations produced by ultrasonic sound waves. NASA GRC is refining miniature instrumentation techniques to find out if energy can be harvested from these glowing bubbles. Read More ...

This division is developing novel instrumentation techniques to test claims of heat production and possible nuclear fusion in sonoluminescent bubbles. The contribution from this branch has been to work on issues of bubble brightness, photography and spectroscopy of multibubble sonoluminescence. Another contribution has been to help build and test in-house concepts for radiation detectors in hopes of achieving a sensor that could detect fusion products in sonoluminescence if they are present.
