Biography
Laura M. Cosgriff is an onsite contract research engineer from Cleveland State University working with the Optical Instrumentation and NDE Branch at the NASA Glenn Research Center. Mrs. Cosgriff acquired a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Cleveland State University and a B.A. in Mathematics from Hiram College. Her research interests include the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of advanced aerospace material systems, such as polymer and ceramic matrix composite materials, multilayered materials, and structural sandwich materials. Primary NDE areas of expertise are in thermographic and ultrasonic techniques such as pulsed thermography, ultrasonic spectroscopy, and ultrasonic guided waves. Recent work involved material characterization and NDE of impact damage in triaxially braided polymer matrix composite materials under the Quiet Aircraft Technology (QAT) program. Her involvement with the Space Shuttle's Return to Flight (RTF) effort included utilizing thermographic and ultrasonic methods to nondestructively evaluate reinforced carbon-carbon panels representative of the leading edge before and after impact with foam projectiles. Under the Ultra Efficient Engine Technology (UEET) program, Mrs. Cosgriff examined impact damage in SiC/SiC composite materials with and without environmental and thermal barrier coatings with digital radiography, computed tomography, pulsed thermography, and optical methods. In addition, she was involved with the development of an ultrasonic guided wave scanning system targeted for the analysis of ceramic matrix composite panels and components under the UEET program.
