Management of Workers Compensation Injuries and Illnesses

What to do when injured at work or diagnosed with a work related illness:

GRC employees who are injured while in the performance of duty must immediately report the injury to their supervisor and then report to the GRC Occupational Medicine Services Clinic  (OMS) to receive treatment and to make an official report of the accident. Occupational illness/disease cases should also be reported to the Clinic. Employees may select a qualified physician of their choice; however, they must first report the injury at the Clinic. Timely reporting of a job-related injury is critical in order to receive all the benefits provided under the Federal Employees Compensation Act (FECA).

The FECA, administered by the Office of Workers Compensation, provides monetary compensation, medical and disability benefits, and other benefits to employees who sustained an on-the-job injury or occupational disease. The FECA also provides for the payment of benefits to dependents if the injury or disease causes the employee's death. In traumatic injury cases, FECA provides for continuation of pay, which is a benefit that continues an employee's regular pay with no charge to sick or annual leave for a maximum of 45 calendar days. Employees should file a written notice (Form CA-1 or CA-2) within 48 hours after an injury and no later than 30 days from the date of the injury in order to be entitled for continuation of pay. All necessary forms for filing a claim for a traumatic injury or occupational disease (Form CA-1 or CA-2) are available at OMS. For injuries and deaths, the law provides that a claim for compensation should be filed within 30 days and must be filed within 3 years of the injury or death in order to be eligible for benefits.

For more information concerning workers' compensation, contact the Benefits Office at 3-2027.
