Life Insurance
Life insurance is available to all students through the Federal Employee Group Life Insurance (FEGLI) Program and NASA Employee Benefit Association (NEBA).
Co-ops are automatically covered under the FEGLI Program upon appointment and may elect optional additional coverage within 31 days from appointment. Co-ops who do not wish to participate may waive coverage at any time, however, payroll deductions will continue until Standard Form 2817 has been submitted waiving the coverage. If students waive the life insurance coverage, they will have to wait 1 year from the effective date of the waiver and also undergo a physical exam (at their own expense) before acquiring coverage. Basic insurance cost is shared by the Co-op and the Government. The entire cost of optional insurance must be paid by the Co-op. Premiums will be paid through payroll deductions while in a work status. Coverage will continue during nonpay status for up to 1 year at which time the insurance terminates and can be converted through the NASA Glenn Insurance Office. Contact the Office of Human Resources and Workforce Planning for further information regarding extended periods of Leave Without Pay.
Co-ops are automatically covered under the NEBA Program upon appointment. Co-ops can elect dependent spouse coverage with an additional premium. Dependent children up to 19 years of age are covered with no proof of insurability at no additional cost if election is made upon entrance on duty. If students initially waive NEBA coverage, they can reapply at any time by completing a medical application. Coverage becomes effective upon receipt of approval from NEBA. Basic insurance cost, optional insurance, and dependent spouse is paid by the Co-op. Premiums will be paid through payroll deductions while in a work status. Coverage will continue during nonpay status for up to 1 year at which time the insurance terminates and can be converted through NEBA. Contact the Insurance Office for further information regarding coverage or periods of extended LWOP.
