NASA Glenn Robotics Demonstrator

NASA Glenn team members Larry Greer, Mike Krasowski, Dan Spina and Phil Beck assembled an inexpensive remote controlled vehicle with a unique operator interface that incorporates a steering wheel, vision system and robotic arm. We asked several FIRST participants, including FIRST founder Dean Kamen, to take a test drive and comment on what they liked and disliked about the control function of the vehicle. Most participants liked the steering interface and the vision system; the camera tracks the steering position. The most popular suggestion for improvement was a 3-D vision system on the vehicle. In fact, the vehicle is 3-D vision capable. This feature was not included in Florida as sharing of the same heads-up display, operator to operator, is not practical or hygenic.
