Wins 1998 FIRST Capitol Hill Invitational
"Havoc on The Hill" Competition
East Tech High School/NASA Lewis
Research Center FIRST robotics team won the 1998 FIRST Capitol Hill Invitational
"Havoc On The Hill" competition in Washington, DC. The event featured a
head-to-head competition between robots build by teams of high school students
and professional engineers. The competitors were selected from among the
205 teams participating in the 1998 FIRST Robotics Competition, as special
invited guests at the event held in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.
Competing against teams from
such diverse organizations as Boston Edison Company/Plymouth North High
School, Delphi Interior/Pontiac Central High School, and the University
of Texas El Paso/Montwood High School, the East Tech/LeRC "Scarabian Knight"
won six of their seven matches. During the best-two-of-three final rounds
against Baxter Healthcare/Mountain Home High School the Cleveland, OH,
"Scarabs" finished the competition with back-to-back wins as their robot
performed flawlessly, scoring point after point during the two-minute
rounds. The impressive performance by the team was very graciously acknowledged
by the various opponents they had faced during the day, who cheered on
the East Tech/LeRC team from the gallery.
Throughout the course of "Havoc
On The Hill", several members of Congress actively participated in the
event. Receiving quick educations in robot operation from the students,
the members gained practical experience as robot drivers and coaches.
Praising the teamwork and dedication of the competitors, the members were
challenged by "Havoc On The Hill" sponsor Representative William Delahunt
(D-MA) to initiate the formation of at least one team in every Congressional
district throughout the country for the 1999 FIRST Competition.
