Theoretical and applied mechanics, computational mechanics, viscoplastic inelastic analysis, metal/matrix composite mechanics, damage mechanics, experimentation, constitutive model development, and smart materials.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Dr. Arnold is currently a senior research engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center, and has been employed in the Structures Division since January of 1988. Prior to that, he spent six months as a visiting research engineer in the Institute of Computational Mechanics in Propulsion (ICOMP) at Lewis, four years (1982-1986) as a NASA Research Fellow while conducting research on both his master and doctoral thesis topics, and one year overall (6/79 - 9/81) as a co-op student at David W. Taylor Naval Ship R&D Center during his bachelor degree. Dr. Arnold currently conducts research involving theoretical and experimental investigations of structural material behavior of advanced aircraft propulsion systems and spacecraft structures and components. His primary emphasis is on the development of advanced (MMC & IMC) high temperature thermo-viscoelastoplastic deformation and damage constitutive models, and associated multiscale design and analysis computational tools required to make these models accessible to the engineering community. Other areas of interest include micromechanics, material process modeling, information management tools, smart materials and general applied mechanics. He also oversaw and coordinated all the analytical modeling research conducted within the advanced high temperature engine materials technology program (HITEMP) at Glenn during the 90's.

Dr. Arnold's research activities have resulted in the development of numerous computational tools (the most notable being the award winning micromechanics analysis code MAC/GMC), a nonlinear hardening, potential based, unified viscoplastic model (GVIPS), a transversely isotropic continuum damage mechanics fatigue life model for unidirectional metal matrix composites (ADEAL) and over 210 technical publications, 71 of which are journal publications, 3 Co-Edited Special Issues dedicated to Functionally Graded Materials and 6 NASA Tech Briefs.
