Mustang History
The North American P-51 Mustang was the fighter airplane of World War II. With its initial flight on April 23, 1941, the P-51 was ideal for low level tactical observations and ground attacks by the Royal Air Force. Aircraft performance declined at altitudes above 15000 feet. This aircraft was also used as a bomber escort. It was nicknamed "Peter Flash Dash" and "Spam Can." After 1943, the P-51 was used by both the United States and Britian on both the European and Pacific fronts. USAF pilots Captain Chuck Yeager and Group Major George Preddy became Aces (5 victories in a single mission) in P-51s.
