Hornet History

The multimission tactical aircraft F/A-18 Hornet by McDonnell Douglas flew its maiden flight in September of 1981. Used by both the US Navy and US Marine Corps as a dual-role fighter attack aircraft, the F/A-18 Hornet is one of the most versatile combat aircraft in service today. The Navy Flight Demonstration Team, the Blue Angels, began flying the F/A-18 in November 1986. Highly reliable and maintainable, the Hornet has served as a fighter escort, in reconnaissance, and in strike missions. The Hornet has a top speed of Mach 2.
