Beginner's
Guide to Propulsion Grade Level: 7-9 National Standards: MathematicsMathematics as Problem Solving - Apply integrated mathematical problem-solving strategies to solve problems from within and outside mathematics. Objectives: After reading an explanation from a NASA Web site called The Beginner's Guide to Propulsion, you will demonstrate an understanding of the text by completing a worksheet on thrust to weight ratios.
The Beginner's Guide to Propulsion is a Web site of information prepared at NASA Glenn Research Center to help you better understand aircraft engine propulsion. Click the Beginner's Propulsion Index to access the list of slides. Go to the bottom of the page and click on the yellow button that gives you the Short Index. Open the slide called Thrust to Weight Ratio under the heading of Aircraft Motion and read the explanation. Then using the background information given at Thrust to Weight Ratio Activity, complete the worksheet designed to demonstrate your ability to research data on the Internet, complete a table, and calculate ratios using the appropriate numbers.
Assessment: You, or you and your partner(s), will be evaluated on the accuracy and/or feasibility of your answers. Evaluation: You will demonstrate the ability to use and understand information found on the World Wide Web by completing an activity on propulsion and using researched data to complete a table and calculate the Thrust to Weight Ratio for various airplanes.
