Post-Conference Activities:
The post-conference activities re-instill
the principles of aeronautics, the concepts behind flight
control surfaces, and the effects of control surfaces on the flight of
an aircraft.
- Activity 1: Controlling
Flight: Rudders, Ailerons, and Elevators (Courtesy
of USAF Museum)
Construct paper gliders and conduct a series of test flights to discover
how the rudder,
elevators, and ailerons affect flight. Measure and record the distances
flown and time aloft during each test flight.
- Activity 2: Speed
Brake (Courtesy
of NASAexplores)
When the space shuttle re-enters earth's atmosphere on it's descent,
it has no power.
This 2,000 pound craft is landed by gliding onto the runway with the
help of a speed brake that uses drag to slow the aircraft down.
Create your own shuttle and
design an original speed brake.
- Activity 3: Future
Aircraft with Control Surfaces
Draw your interpretation of aircraft of the future and their control
surfaces. Submit
your drawings as a class by mailing them to:
NASA GLENN LTP
c/o Dave Mazza
21000 Brookpark Road MS 142-1
Cleveland, OH 44135
The drawings will be reviewed by the engineer presenters, and the
most innovative will be posted to the website with comments. Please
include your name, grade, teacher's name, school, and school address
on the back of your drawing.
