The Earth's atmosphere blurs objects in terrestial telescopes, while telescopes used in space tend to show a clearer image. The magnification of an object is determined by the focal length of the primary lens or mirror of the telescope, divided by the focal length of the eyepiece.

There are two types of mountings for a telescope: an altazimuth mount, which allows the telescope to move up, down, and sideways, but not diagonally; and equatorial mount, which allows the telescope to spin in every direction.
