[Lithium Based Battery]

Lithium-based battery technology has the potential to reduce both power system mass and volume, to increase mission capabilities and to enable small spacecraft missions. This technology can reduce both power system and launch costs. A joint cooperative Lithium-Ion Battery Development Program between the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory/Glenn Research Center and the Department of Defense has been established for the development of lithium-ion liquid electrolyte batteries for aerospace applications for the year 2000 and beyond. This is an integrated program incorporating input from users, members of the battery manufacturing industry and aerospace primes.
