Cyclic Oxidation Laboratory Cyclic Oxidation Furnace

This facility consists of a total of 13 tube furnaces, 9 capable of operating up to 1200 oC and 4 up to 1600 oC, all operating in static air. Each furnace contains 6 symmetrically arranged 1 1/4 inch diameter ceramic tubes open at the top. Test sample alloy coupons are suspended on platinum wires and are automatically raised and lowered in and out of the furnace tubes by pneumatic pistons to determine its cyclic oxidation behavior. These pistons are controlled for fixed cycle times by electronic reset timers and for a fixed number of cycles set by an electronic counter control.

The samples are removed periodically and weighed to determine sample specific weight change to evaluate oxidation kinetics and for x-ray diffraction analysis to define the nature of the oxide scale buildup.
