| Approximately
half of the engineers in the NASA Glenn Acoustics
Branch are dedicated to finding practical ways to calculate
the noise generated by aircraft engines. Insight
gained through fundamental research is incorporated
into new computer programs by our team.
How do engine components make noise? How does that
noise reach the ears of people on the ground? Which
changes to the engine will make it run more quietly?
Calculating noise estimates is tougher than it sounds,
and NASA research is vital. Without a thorough understanding
of how noise is created and spreads, there would be
no reliable way to estimate aircraft engine noise.
