The Fluids and Combustion Facility Combustion Integrated Rack will be the primary facility for conducting
microgravity combustion experiments on the International Space Station. In order to utilize this facility
most effectively, the NASA Glenn Research Center is building several "mini-facilities" in order to
perform combustion research. The mini-facilities will consist of a piece of hardware that is inserted
into the combustion chamber in the CIR as well as any of the diagnostics and consumables (fuels, gases,
etc.) that would be necessary to perform the required tests. The mini-facility hardware, combined with
the hardware provided by the CIR, is intended to meet the science requirements of the individual
experiments. The first of these mini-facilities will be the Multi-user
Droplet Combustion Apparatus (MDCA), which will be available for investigators to study the burning of
liquid fuels in the form of droplets.
The purpose of this test was to measure the acoustic emission levels of MDCA for purposes of comparison with
the noise emission limits specified in the FCF Interface Control Document.
